Tula mntwana - Hush Baby
(Xhosa/Ngqika recorded in 1957)
Released Area 32. Kingwilliamstown District, Cape Province, S. Africa.
Lullaby with clapping. Two elderly women. Both singers were grandmothers who were nursing their grandchildren in their arms, and sung lullabies which must have been repeated many hundreds of times in their lifetime. Others sitting nearby provided the clapping in the background.
Sampled by Boys Ride Bikes, Jakinda and Thor Rixon on 'Beating Heart - South Africa' - lnk.to/BH-SASo
With kind permission from the International Library of African Music, Beating Heart works with artists to sample and remix Hugh Tracey's incredible archive. I have loved the dixie Humming birds since the 1960s, but have never heard their early work--amazing. Listening to all this wonderous harmony and spirit comes close to restoring my lost faith in Christianity. ronspin

I saw Msafiri Zawose play WOMAD UK on two occasions this year and fell under his charm as he played solo gigs. This is great to hear him play with other musicians. gr4h4m
